Charlene Matheson, the owner of the stall that was demolished at Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt, last Wednesday has expressed her frustrations at the way in which the authorities are handling the matter of her demolished business.
According to Ms Matheson, she owns the land behind the stall and she also has a garden from which she sells her produce at the stall.
“We used to plant cash crop, and now we plant fruit tree, cherry, genip, lemon, mangoes, plum, oranges, coconuts and sour sop on the same land behind our business.
We have been doing this for decades, we are honest people trying to make a living and this is how we are being treated,” said Matheson.
She added that she have not heard anything from anyone in authority since the demolition, to assist her with a solution to place her business.
“I have letters to the various Ministries and city council that I have asked for assistance” she said.
According to her husband, Lennox Matheson, he has four children, the eldest being 16 years old, and has been a farmer for decades. He said that the stall and farming have produced money to care for his family.
He said that it appears as if his livelihood is being taken away.
“I think this is discrimination because I am a Rasta man” he said.
He said that he never received any letters from anyone stating that he should remove from the area. No one told him anything, he added.
He said that he wrote to the town clerk and never received a reply.
He said that he even told the council that he normally cleans the environment and that he could be a contract worker since no one from the council comes to the vicinity to clean. His request was denied.
A group of City Constables along with members of the Police Force descended on Matheson Variety at Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt, in the vicinity of Lamaha Springs and demolished the stall for the fifth time last Wednesday.
