– More work still to be done, but optimism high
By Rawle Welch
ICC Communications Officer James Fitzgerald told the media during a wrapping up session on Guyana’s preparedness to host matches in the upcoming World Twenty20 Championships that from what they’ve seen so far, nothing is so worrying that could prevent this country from hosting its leg of the event.
Fitzgerald, who along with Pitch Consultant Andy Atkinson, Corporate Communications Manager Gayle Alleyne, Host Liaison Vivienne Brown, Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) President Chetram Singh and members of the Local Organising Committee reported on the fact finding mission of the team here to assess Guyana’s preparation for the tournament which is scheduled to be played in April-May this year.
Speaking at the closing ceremony yesterday at the National Stadium, Fitzgerald thanked the GCB and Stadium authorities for their hospitality which he rated as second to none and a feature which is expected here.
He said they had covered nearly all the aspects associated with hosting an event of such magnitude which included media, commercial, security among others and what they found was that even though some work still has to be done, they are optimistic that the time is adequate for it to be completed.
He regarded the trip as fantastic, adding that what they saw was sheer enthusiasm and the expertise to complete the job.
Fitzgerald also spoke of how fast tickets were selling for the Guyana leg of the tournament which he referred to as perhaps the best of the three venues.
He, too, compared last year’s visit with the present, outlining that the previous one was just a preliminary phase where they made certain recommendations, while the current visit has revealed that all the necessary equipment are in place including all the media space required to accommodate the large cadre of personnel who’re expected to these shores.
Atkinson also echoed similar sentiments, stating that he was very satisfied with the progress made since the last visit.
“It is work still in action, but we have 14-15 weeks to go and I’m pretty sure all that remains to be done will be done in the specified time.”
“Basically most of the things are in place and we are satisfied,” he emphasised.
Asked whether the recent spate of football activity had done any specific damage to the outfield, Atkinson said that “to a certain degree yes, but you have to understand that a big stadium like this needs activities to keep it viable.”
Touching on security, Fitzgerald agreed that it is a big issue, but informed that there is a Security Directors Meeting planned for Barbados shortly where all the particulars pertaining to the said subject will be discussed.
He said that he was not at liberty to divulge details on such a sensitive matter.
Meanwhile, Brown praised the hotels for their high standards, adding that they’ve been in constant dialogue with the relevant hoteliers indicating their requirements and so far the feedback has been positive.
Commenting on the general preparations of the individual host countries, Brown disclosed that, “everywhere we go there are different issues at different venues, but nothing so worrying to prevent the tournament from not happening.”
Singh in his remarks reminded the media that the opportunity was there to field all pertinent questions to the team as to Guyana’s preparedness for the event.
He said that from all reports, they are ready to host their leg of the competition and expected it to have a positive impact for the rest of the tournament.
