– residents complain
Residents of Wakenaam are complaining about the poor condition of the main road around the island.
The residents are claiming that the authorities have neglected the roads resulting in its present state. They say that when the rains come the road will become impassable.
Residents of Zeelandia claim that they are most seriously affected because they live farthest away from the Stellings and the main shopping areas. They have to pay as much as $1,500 for a single trip.
The children who attend the secondary school find great difficulties to ride their bicycles among the loose stones and holes on the road.
Several of them have suffered injuries from falls. Apart from this, the cost of maintaining a bicycle is very costly because tyres and tubes do not last very long.
The sick and pregnant women have difficulties in reaching the hospital as transportation is either unavailable or very costly.
Motorists complain that maintenance cost of their vehicles is very high because of damage to tyres, shocks, springs and other vulnerable parts of their vehicles.
Yet, another resident asked, “Why build an airstrip when the road is urgently needed?” The Region Three Vice Chairman said that while the roads at Wakenaam may be bad it is still better than many other roads in the country.
He also said that money is to be budgeted this year to repair the road from Sarah to Caledonia. He also said that a shipment of crush and run has been ordered for repairs to the road.
When the crush and run arrives, a grader and other machinery will be sent to the island to begin the repair work.
