– As government buys 2,000 acres from GuySuCo
Government has announced that it has sealed a deal with the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) for 10,000 more house lots on the East Bank Demerara.
Yesterday, President Bharrat Jagdeo, fresh from his return from a visit to the Middle East, also said that the 2,000 acres of land would see, within two years, basic infrastructure being put into place for allocations.
A $4B supplementary allocation to the Ministry of Housing, recently, has been used for the purchase of the land.
Minister of Housing, Irfaan Ali, yesterday, revealed that the house lots will be located from Peters Hall to Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
However, several issues, including identification and surveying, will have to be worked out before the infrastructural works can start. Then there will have to be the tender phase for contractors to carry out the works.
Minister Ali said that the 10,000 house lots are part of the 17,000 announced by government to meet the huge demand. In Region Four especially, the demand is the highest in the country.
Areas targeted for more housing development includes Hope and Non Pareil, on the East Coast Demerara; Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, and Zeelugt, West Coast Demerara. Further expansion will also be done at Parfait Harmonie and Onderneeming.
The $4B allocation was critical for the purchase of the GuySuCo land, the Minister noted, to fulfill the policy of meeting the 17,000 house lots and meeting the Region 4 demands.
Important to note that much more investments will be required to ensure the infrastructure will be put in place to ensure that service lots are created for the allottees.
“The recent ramblings of the opposition forces must be silenced by the transformation of the housing sector and the fulfillment of a critical need of our people. Something no doubt that was absent prior to 1992,” the Minister said.
The Minister said that his Ministry stands committed to the investments of the $4B as the people of Guyana will benefit.
“We stand committed to transparency and accountability in delivering services to our people. We will also stand strong against any force that seeks to walk out on a vote that sought to bring this benefit to our people. When the roll is called up, the people will have their say.”
According to Ali, developmental works will be done in a phased manner and will include detailed surveys, plans and designs. Eventually a costing will have to be worked out on infrastructural works, which will then have to be tendered and executed.
Then there is the stage of allocating the house lots.
