Residents of Versailles, West Bank Demerara are frustrated at the manner in which the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and the Regional Chairman are dealing with the issue of persons dumping carcasses at the sluice which already is not in proper working condition.
They allege that the refuse dumping is contributing to floods in the area.
One resident, Mohamed Haniff, said that he made several complaints, some since November last year to the NDC and to Julius Faerber, the Regional Chairman, but to date nothing has been done to rectify the situation.
Haniff said that the non – functioning of the sluice has created stagnated water which is clearly a health hazard for residents in the community.
According to the resident, the canal leading to the sluice was recently dug and the silt and waste materials were thrown and left on the sides of the bank of the canal.
He explained that whenever it rains, the silt is washed back into the canal.
But he said that residents from other areas are also to be blamed.
“People are dumping garbage, dead animals, pigs and cow guts at the koker door, can you believe people come from Vreed-en-Hoop to dump their rubbish here?” he said.
Another resident said that from the stench the community is seriously affected.
“Can you believe you go to sleep with that smell and its all over your house and you wake up to it too… that can make you run crazy, even the gym members can’t exercise properly because of the scent” the resident said.
It was also said that the regional authorities are not functioning effectively since there is only talk and no action.
Efforts by this newspaper to contact Regional Chairman, Julius Faber, were unsuccessful.
