Mash Round-Up….
(By Mondale Smith)
The 2010 calypso events begin with the junior competition at the National Cultural Centre next Saturday and will feature eight competitors from Region 10 and four from Region Four.
Unlike previous years the competition will offer a first prize cash incentive of $150,000 through a partnership with the Culture Ministry and the Ministry of Education’s Allied Arts Department.
The second and third place finishers will each pocket $100,000 and $75,000 respectively. There will be added attractions such as dance, drama and poetry recitals.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, has announced that an entrance fee will be charged and that the proceeds will go toward the efforts being made by the National Committee for Haiti Relief.
“This would be children performing for children and donating to a generous cause,” the Minister said. The competitors are scheduled to meet with him today.
The reigning monarch will not be in this year’s competition as a result of unforeseen circumstances.
