The outcome of President Bharrat Jagdeo’s visit to the Middle East will be judged from what benefits it brings to Guyana.
This assertion was made by leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Mr Robert Corbin, during the party’s most recent press briefing.
It has been reported that the President’s visit to the Middle East which commenced last week represents the breaking of new bilateral ground. But according to Corbin, “I don’t know whether that is the first (in terms of breaking new ground) but the relevant issue of concern…is that we have been treated to the benefits of a touring president’s diary who has spent more time in this occupation travelling around the world than really attending to the very serious problems of this country.”
It is the belief of the leader of the main opposition party that had the president focused more on problems at home, the country could have “a better footing.”
However, he mooted that no criticism should be forthcoming as the overseas visit has to be judged from what benefits it brings back to Guyana.
Corbin nonetheless noted that “If it is like the trip to Norway and the much publicised high expectation from the Climate Summit then I don’t think we have much to expect.”
The President, accompanied by his Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues, among others, last week left for the Middle East.
During the visit, the local delegation was able to meet with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Reports are that Khamenei has commended Guyana for adopting an independent foreign policy in dealing with international affairs and has also promised his country’s friendship. “Those nations trying to remain independent and do not intend to trample upon rights of others are regarded as our friends, irrespective of their races or languages,” Khamenei said.
Referring to common ground shared by both countries in various fields such as commerce, industry and mining, the Supreme Leader said Iran was ready to transfer its invaluable experiences to Guyana.
He indicated that the large number of Muslims in Guyana and its membership of the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) have prepared the ground for expansion of co-operation between the two countries.
And on Friday reports were that Guyana had signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Iran in the areas of political and visa services and Iran’s development assistance to Guyana.
The documents were endorsed by Minister Rodrigues-Birkett and her Iranian counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki.
– President Jagdeo and his delegation, which also includes member of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG), Fazeel Ferouz, among others, continued their Middle East trip that has already seen them visiting Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to generate interest for investments in Guyana.
