– mother slams conditions at institution
A grieving mother is slamming conditions at the Bartica Hospital after her 18-year-old daughter died under unusual circumstances at the institution, allegedly without being tended to by a doctor.
Penny King, of Lot 108 Four Miles Potaro Road Middle Mazaruni, was pronounced dead just around midnight last Friday by a Medex mere hours after being admitted to the institution.
Her mother, Audrey King, alleged that during the time at the hospital, her daughter was only seen by junior staff.
A senior hospital official has promised to investigate the allegations.
This newspaper was told that the teen had earlier in the week complained about a pain in her back. As such, she was taken to the Bartica Hospital on Wednesday where she was given some pain medication and an injection. She was told to return to the hospital on Thursday for another injection which she did. However, on Friday, the pain became more severe. The teen’s mother, Audrey King, rushed her back to the hospital on Friday.
Mrs. King told this newspaper that her daughter was talking during the journey but when she arrived there she stopped communicating.
At the hospital, the woman said the hospital’s midwife and a “young nurse” began attending to her daughter.
According to the teen’s mother, the two nurses immediately administered saline and an injection. The pain nevertheless continued, and her daughter indicated to her that her body was growing numb.
At that point, the woman said one of the nurses contacted a Medex and informed him of the situation. Sometime later the woman said the nurses informed her that her daughter needed oxygen. The woman said she had to assist the nurse in getting the oxygen bottle from the male ward to where her daughter was since no porters were around.
The grieving woman said that the nurses then told her that her daughter needed to have an x-ray done. To her surprise, Ms. King said one of the nurses gave her directions to the X-ray Technician’s home and asked her to go there to call him down to the hospital. Some time close to midnight, King said she left the Bartica Hospital for the Technician’s home.
But after standing in front of the Technician’s residence for several minutes, she got no answer and returned to the hospital.
After all this transpired the woman said the Medex finally arrived and by that time the woman said her daughter was already dead.
“When the Medex came all he said was sorry there is nothing more he can do, that she done dead. He even say he can’t imagine that a young strong girl like she dead so sudden,” King said.
According to the mother, the following morning, a doctor who lives in a house in the hospital compound informed the relatives that a post mortem should be done.
Later, King said she went to the Bartica Police Station to inform them of her daughter’s death and to ask for a rank to escort the body to the city.
The woman said the police informed her that this could not be done, since they could only have done so if it was a murder case.
