The intent of traffic signals is to control and separate conflicts between vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists to enable safe and efficient operations and as such, the Ministry of Public Works is gearing to undertake geometric improvements to the lights at intersections in Georgetown.
Good geometric design combined with good traffic control can result in an intersection that operates efficiently and safely.
To this end, invitation for tenders to undertake the project has already been made public and will close in February.
Bidders will have to purchase the bidding documents and lodge a security fee of $500,000.
The move appears to be an apparent switch in the positions of the Ministry, given that shortly after the lights were installed prior to Guyana’s staging of its leg of the Cricket World Cup, there was a plethora of complaints from drivers and pedestrians.
The main complaint was the times on the traffic signal.
Many contended that at some places the red signal was on for too long, while the green was way too short.
Many motorists have been urging the Ministry to properly assess the manner in which traffic flows and recalibrate the lights accordingly.
The subject Minister, Robeson Benn at that time, had said that the lights were fine the way they were and people needed to adjust to the changes and no demands for change would be met.
Some of the benefits of geometric improvements include reducing the frequency and severity of intersection conflicts through traffic control and operational improvements.
CMS Traffic System Limited, an Indian firm is the company that installed the more than $US2M system in 2007.
The project was made possible through a US$2.1M Line of Credit from the Indian EXIM Bank. Physical work on the project commenced on January 21, 2007, and was completed on July 11 that year.
CMS Traffic Systems Limited of India, engaged the services of local Sub-contractors, Gaico Construction Inc, Civ-Tech Construction & Contracting Services, Godfrey Bovell Construction Services and Novad Consultants & General Contractors for the execution of the project.
The lights also feature a pedestrian push button feature which allows pedestrians to make a demand on the system to cross the street.
