Wife beater jailed…
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, has sent a strong message to wife beaters by sending a 40-year old Corentyne labourer to cool off for four days in prison.
Naresh Jaffar, of Chesney, Corentyne, appeared before the magistrate last Friday, charged with assaulting his wife Sabita Nourang.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Satrohan Dayaram told the court that on January 21st, following an argument at their home, Jaffar dealt his wife a few blows about her body. Unlike many other abused women, Jaffar’s wife took the matter to the police and was prepared to go the full distance in court.
The woman told the court that her husband is always in the habit of beating her and on the day in question he continued with his usual habit. She told the court that he even threatened her with a spade and she was no longer prepared to put up with the abuse.
The accused in his defence denied beating his wife.
His story was that the woman is always in the habit of cursing him and he does not usually bother with her.
But on the day in question, the cursing ‘got under his skin’ and he gave the woman four slaps. Demonstrating to the court, the man said that he never threatened her with a spade, but was doing his work, showing the court how he was operating the spade.
After listening to both sides the magistrate believed the woman’s story and sent Jaffar off to jail, one day for each slap.
