Ministry aiming to indentify projects for partnership
Honorable minister of Culture Youth and sport Dr. Frank Anthony has commenced a series of meetings with national federations and associations.
The meetings are held on Friday’s at the Sports Ministry and are designed for the Minister to have a better understanding of what is taking place within the various entities to identify areas where the Ministry can partner with them.
Dr. Anthony has reported that to date, meetings have been held with the Amateur Athletics Association, Netball, Badminton, Volleyball, Powerlifting and Hockey Associations.
“I think it’s a useful process, we get to learn more about the associations and their challenges. We are also trying to work out at least one or two projects that the Ministry can partner with them on and so far I think it has been going very well.”
The Ministry is trying to ensure that the associations and federations are being governed according to their constitutions in terms of regular meetings and their finances being in order.
“But in addition to that, we are placing a lot of emphasis on developmental programmes. For those associations and federations who do not have such programmes, we are working to have them understand what it takes to have such and what we as a ministry is looking for.”
Minister Anthony said it’s a learning process for both sides pointing out that administrators in the past would have had their own concepts on what is needed and have been working steadfastly in that regard but not seeing the bigger picture.
“Now that we are showing them the thrust of the Government and Ministry, where we want to go and what we want to do for the development of sports, by seeing that broader picture they are able to align themselves into this broader arrangement.
And by doing this, I think we’ll be able to point to concrete achievements by the end of the year, we will be able to measure progress.”
