Guyana on the ropes at 112-5 replying to Jamaica’s 429
By Sean Devers in Barbados In association with Carib Beer, Leisure Inn, Caribbean Airlines & Brydens & Fernandes
Wavell Hinds (151) and Carlton Baugh (124) shared in a 233-run 7th wicket partnership yesterday as Jamaica reached 429 against Guyana on the 2nd day of their 3rd round Regional 4-day First-Class match at the Foursquare Oval in rural Barbados.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul took his maiden 5-wicket haul (5-63) and the genuinely quick but erratic Brandon Bess had 4-107 for the Guyanese who were 112-5 by the close, still 318 away from Jamaica’s total.
Assad Fudadin (31) was the not out batsman for the South Americans who came into this game with 3 points from their drawn first game against T&T in Antigua and will have to do a lot of work today to stay in the contest.
Hinds stroked 13 fours and 6 sixes from 317 balls and 385 minutes in his 21st First Class ton and along with Baugh, who smashed 13 fours and 3 sixes from 133 balls and 198 minutes in his 11th First Class hundred, put together a Jamaica record 7th wicket partnership of 233 as they flayed an innocuous bowling attack on a flat track.
The pair joined forces on the first day at 190-6 and dominated the entire first session yesterday with commanding batting but fell well short of the Regional 7th wicket record of 284 held by Alvin Kallicharran and Clive Lloyd for Guyana at Bourda against Trinidad and Tobago in 1981.
Both batsmen survived a chance before they both fell with the score on 423 as Permaul mopped up the tail with Jamaica being dismissed an hour after Lunch.
Skipper Sewnarine Chattergoon was dropped at slip off Dave Bernard on 10 at 25-0 and by Tea he was unbeaten on 14 while 20-year-old Rajendra Chandrika was not out on 13 at the break with Guyana on 29-0.
After Tea the Guyanese progressed solidly to 56 before both openers fell on that score and Test player Travis Dowlin was caught under the bat for a first ball duck as Guyana slumped to 57-3.
Chattergoon (22) was leg before as he played around a ball from Bernard, while the next ball; from West Indies left-arm spinner Nikita Miller, trapped Chandrika (30) leg before as he missed a sweep. Miller then finished a fine over by removing Dowlin.
Deonarine, the team’s in-form batsman with scores of 41 and 104 not out in his first match, joined Assad Fudadin and the pair took their team to 106 before Deonarine, who hit 3 fours in 24, was stupendously caught at deep mid-on by Bernard to spark wild celebrations in the Jamaican camp.
Night watchman Davendra Bishoo (0) was bowled off the final ball of the day by Miller who so far has 3-25 off 15.3 overs while a lot will depend on Fudadin, Christian and the Crandon brothers today of Guyana are to pull themselves out of the hole they have dug themselves in.
Earlier, Jamaica resumed on 239-6 with Hinds on 71 and Baugh on 29 and the pair put their team in a commanding position with enterprising and sensible batting on a track which again looked good for bating on another day blessed with glorious sunshine.
Both Hinds and Baugh took the attack to the Guyana pair of Deonarine and Bess with the little Baugh especially severe on Bess cutting him disdainfully for consecutive boundaries square on the off-side before clipping him elegantly off his hips for another boundary as he raced to his 18th first class fifty on the fast outfield.
Hinds then cut Bess for fours off successive balls before he was dropped at extra cover by Fudadin on 85 off Bess as the West Berbice pacer bowled with pace but too short and too wide. Leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo replaced the erratic Bess from the Northern end and was greeted with a huge six from Baugh over mid-wicket as he bowled too short.
The 33-year-old Hinds soon reached his ton to become the leading run scorer this season. His century came from 305 minutes, 256 balls with 10 fours and 2 sixes and it was his 3rd score over 50 for the season.
The spinners allowed too many back foot shots on a slow track with a little bounce and turn and the Jamaican overnight pair enjoyed themselves as they extended their partnership to 160 by lunch. Baugh reached his hundred with 11 fours and 2 sixes from just 115 balls and 159 minutes and his savage array of shots entertained a good size crowd which included mostly Guyanese.
The solid Hinds was unbeaten on 114 and Baugh 100 at lunch with Jamaica, who scored 121 runs in the first session, on 360-6.
Hinds and Baugh continued their onslaught in the 2nd session with pugnacious shots and Guyana paid the price for asking Chandrika to ‘Keep because regular Wicketkeeper Derwin Christian did not come out after lunch due to a stomach problem.
Chandrika dropped Baugh on 100 at 373-6, as the former Test Keeper edged a ball that left him from Esuan Crandon. Christian soon re-appeared and Hinds lofted Permaul for three consecutive sixes while the pint-size Baugh launched into Crandon and smashed the pacer for a 4 and a 6 off successive balls as leaders Jamaica, with outright wins against the Windwards and Leewards, galloped unchecked past the 400 mark early in the post lunch session.
Hinds, with 45 Tests and 166 First-Class matches under his belt, soon reached his 150 as the Guyanese spread the field far and wide in scorching heat and the bowling attack became more and more innocuous.
The off-spin of Royston Crandon was introduced and he made the break through when Baugh gloved a sweep and was caught by Christian to leave Jamaica on 423-7.
Baugh’s demise was soon followed by that of Hinds who top-edged a sweep to slip off Permaul without addition to the score. Jamaica slipped to 426-9 when Daren Powell (4) was bowled by Permaul and it was soon all over as Permaul had Miller taken at slip for 1.
