Anand Persaud hit a resilient 153 to lead Harry XI to a resounding victory over King’s X1 when play continued in the Carib Beer National Softball Tournament organized by the Guyana Softball League in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport last Sunday. Budhan Baksh lashed an unbeaten 125 but in the end his effort proved insufficient as Harry’s X1 pulled off the win. In another match played in the East Coast Zone, Harry XI mauled John Cena XI by massive 190 runs. Harry XI won the toss and batted first, amassing 237-8 in 15 overs. Anand Persaud scored 153 (10×6; 5×4) to post a challenging total for the eventual winners. In reply, John Cena XI was bundled out for 47 in 12.5 overs.
Harry XI returned later in the day and made light work of Hot Steppers XI by 22 runs. The winners were inserted after losing the toss and posted a challenging 201-6 in 15 overs. Azeemul Haniff (82) was the best batsman. Anil Rambarran (3-20 from 3 overs) then confined Surprise Warriors to 179-8 in their 15 overs. Desperado then defeated Hot Steppers XI (in their 2nd match) by 9 wickets.
Hot Steppers XI batted first and scored 182 all out in 14.3 overs with Sham Budram (56) taking the batting honours. In reply, Desperado XI, led by a sterling knock from Clifton Persaud (81) erased the total (189-1) in 11.3 overs.
In other results, Gopaul Mandir defeated Ogle U19 by a decisive 149 runs and then returned later that day to defeat Young Eagles by 5 runs. Uprising XI then triumphed over Ogle U19 by 4 wickets. In the other match, also played that day,
Annandale West defeated Hitters XI by 8 wickets. Annandale West then returned and completed the double by defeating Ogle U19 by 109 runs.
In matches played on the East Coast, New Generation defeated Farmers XI by 6 wickets just before Unity Lancaster defeated Helena Mandir XI by 7 wickets.
A N &S Auto Spares made light work of Little Bhai Boo XI by 106 runs after batting first and rattling up 181- 5 in 15 overs. Davendra Persaud (88) contributed the most runs for the winners. In reply Little Bhai Boo were bundled out for 75 in 15 overs.
Auto Fashion XI then defeated Water land XI by 52 runs moments before Supply XI defeated Randy XI by 20 runs.
On the Eve Leary Ground Kings XI handed Renegade their first loss of the competition by 38 runs. Kings XI batted first and scored 186-2 in 15 overs and then restricted their opponents to 148 all out in 15 overs,
Kings XI retained their impeccable record in their second match against Zahir XI by 128 runs. Kings XI batted first and scored 239-5 in 15 overs while Zahir X1 made 111 all out in 11.4 overs. Zahir XI made amends in their second match, defeating Rapid Fire XI by 5 wickets.
Over on the West Coast, on the Leonora Primary School Ground, Surprise Warriors gained a walkover from Leonora Youths ‘A’ Team. Hyde Park also clinched a similar result over Leonora Youths ‘A’ Team while Surprise Warriors defeated Uitvlugt Youths “B” Team. Leonora Youths ‘B’ prevailed over Ruimzeight XI by 7 wickets.
At the Parika Hydronie Ground, the home team defeated Shattaville XI by 56 runs while in the Berbice zone Memorex Enterprises defeated Rangers XI by 43 runs. Young Guns also defeated Rangers XI by 8 runs to cap off activities in that zone. All matches in the Linden zone were aborted because of the inclement weather.
