The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) yesterday said it has trained and rehired 80 persons as part of its reform and regularisation plan.
The Corporation sees this as a huge success with just a few vacancies left to be filled.
The Corporation met with officials from the Ministry of Labour as well as representatives from the said Union last Monday.
According to the GPOC, it has always maintained that the Guyana Postal and Telecommunications Workers Unit does not have “locus standi” in representing casuals because the latter does not fall within their bargaining unit. The Corporation said the prudent management would not allow the GPOC to reinstate the status quo.
The Corporation said that it will honour all of its legal obligations concerning the casuals in question and hence the 80 persons had been trained and rehired.
It added that while it must be pointed out that the Union had asked for employees to be reinstated; they never asked for these to be paid any severance.
The Corporation, as was mentioned earlier, had resolved prior to this meeting with the Union and the Ministry of Labour to honour all legal obligations to the casuals and had not decided to do this because the Union “was able to force the management to comply with the sections of the Termination of Employment and severance Pay Act.”
On January 5, last, the Corporation advised casuals that they could apply to fill vacancies of Postal Apprentices by attending a training programme and completing written and practical tests.
