Vice President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Maurice Rajkumar has demonstrated that he is a man of both words and action when he delivered on an earlier promise made to the coach of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym, James Walcott, to donate the necessary funds towards the renovation of that entity.
Yesterday morning Mr. Rajkumar and several executives of GABA including President, Steve Ninvalle, Treasurer, Dexter Patterson and Public Relations Officer, Michael Benjamin visited the gym where they performed the traditional dismantling ceremony, tearing down a part of the eastern wall to signal the start of the process.
Already, the contractors, headed by Alvin Bacchus have commenced works on the toilet and bath and have dug a large hole to facilitate construction on the septic tank. Plans are also in train to install adequate lighting as well as renovate the boxing ring.
Yesterday morning Walcott started receiving the materials towards the construction process. These include zinc sheets, concrete blocks, and sacks of cement among others. Mr. Rajkumar explained that he had initially received a document with an estimated cost of $300,000 to complete the project. He said that it was only after he had started purchasing the materials that he realized that the project would have cost more than the estimated sum. Nevertheless, he decided to foot the bill since he had already committed himself to the task.
To date, three contractors have turned on to work including electrician Suresh Jadanauth plumber Abraham Sahib, general contractor Alvin Bacchus, also a resident of the Albouystown district. The three donated their services free of charge but Mr. Rajkumar has still decided to pay them a small stipend. He has also extended the same offer to any of the young boxers that may want to contribute their labour to the cause.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ninvalle disclosed that he recently held discussions with Seon Bristol, a former boxer and current promoter who resides in the United States of America. He said that Bristol was very elated to hear of the projections in place for the amateur boxers and has since promised to speak with other members of the Diaspora in New York to raise enough funds to offset the various fees owed by GABA to World Governing Amateur Boxing Association (IABA).
Mr. Ninvalle said that he was indeed grateful for such assistance and would be working assiduously to encourage other such interventions from the local business community as well as other members of the Diaspora.
