– Fire started in parked car under house
A couple who was holidaying in the United States returned last evening to the news that their recently built home was destroyed by fire.
Reports are that some time after midnight on Friday a two-storey house located at 222 Good Intent, West Bank Demerara, was destroyed by fire. Two other close-by buildings were scorched.
Only two weeks ago the owner of the house, Hassan Inshan, and his wife, Natasha Inshan, left for the United States after holding a thanksgiving service to celebrate the opening of their home.
The homeowner’s sister, Bibi Inshan, told this newspaper that just after midnight on Thursday she received a call from her brother’s neighbour saying that the car which was parked under his house was on fire.
The woman said that she and other relatives who resided not far from where the fire occurred raced down to scene. By that time the woman said the entire house was engulfed with flames.
The woman said that she immediately summoned the fire service and half an hour into the fire then the first fire tender from the Wales Estate arrived. The fire tender from Georgetown arrived shortly after. However, their response did manage to save two close-by buildings from destruction.
The building on the northern side of the Inshans home had its roof scorched while the other building had its walls scorched.
Several eyewitnesses’ accounts support the homeowner’s story, which says that the fire started in the car. One man said that moments before flames were seen coming from the house, the car alarm went off.
Mr. Inshan, who is a trader, and his wife, who is a teacher, only moved into their new home November month end. The couple had been living with Inshan’s parents and only on Thursday last they celebrated moving into their own home, before leaving for the United States on a brief vacation.
Up to press time, Inshan’s sister said that her brother’s losses run into millions of dollars as they did not manage to save anything from being destroyed. The car, which is also said to be new, was completely destroyed.
In the meantime, the Guyana Fire Service now has yet another added to its list of unsolved fire investigations.
