Footballers of the Western Tigers FC have responded to the impromptu resignation of the entire executive committee and it seems as though plans are in train to install an interim committee to conduct the affairs of the club.
The footballers were tightlipped concerning the issue but from all appearances Magistrate Nigel Hawke seems to be their preference for the position to head the committee.
The magistrate visited the club’s West Ruimveldt ground last evening and held initial talks with the footballers. Several other ‘interested persons’ also attended the forum including Pastor of the Durban Street Assemblies of God Church, Raphael Jackson.
When Kaieteur Sport arrived at the site, captain of the Western Tigers FC, Dillon Fraser was involved in earnest discussions with Mr. Hawke and Mr. Jackson while other members of the club engaged in practice sessions on the field. Shortly afterwards, when the training sessions had ended, Mr. Hawke, Mr. Jackson and coach of the club, Cornel Millington assembled the players in the center of the field for a short briefing session.
Mr. Hawke informed the players that he was aware of the imbroglio and was an interested party who wanted to have the issue resolved. He said that even though his team was referred to as an interim committee, they were only responding to an appeal from concerned members of the club for help to resolve the issue. “We are attempting to chart a way forward for the club in an effort to have football played on the field,” informed Mr. Hawke. He further urged the players to take control of their destiny and not to allow the administrators to destroy the club. “No one is bigger than the game,” Mr. Hawke admonished the footballers. He then urged them to bond towards a common cause.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hawke told Kaieteur Sport that he is a former resident of West Ruimveldt. He said his primary objective was to see the youths of West Ruimveldt involved in constructive activity. He said that Mr. Gilhuys, who also served on the bench, was a colleague and friend and he envisages no problems engaging in constructive dialogue with the former magistrate.
Mr. Hawke further said that his group is interested in knowing what the constitution says on the matter and are now attempting to obtain a copy for perusal. He said that when this task is accomplished he would be in a better position to chart a course forward.
Quizzed on his reaction should Mr. Gilhuys reconsider his stance, Mr. Hawke said, “That would be a plus towards my reconciliatory efforts.” He said that he is willing and ready to have talks with Mr. Gilhuys and was even willing to mediate at any meeting aimed at reconciliation.
