Two Mondays ago he fell off a bed he was sharing with another patient at the Georgetown Hospital.
This newspaper had photographed and published the incident and for that the patient who gave his name as Rabindra Rooplall is accusing the hospital administration of prematurely discharging him, for “calling in the media”.
On Wednesday night, ‘Rooplall’ who also goes by several other aliases, was discharged from the hospital where he was a patient since December 8 last year, reportedly suffering from malaria.
This newspaper caught up with him yesterday morning at the Ruimveldt Police Station, where he was dumped after spending a night at the government night shelter in East La Penitence.
The man who was trembling uncontrollably while sitting on a bench in the station told this newspaper that he was discharged from the hospital by a social worker who accused him of calling in the media to highlight his plight.
“The social worker took me off the bed and put on these clothes on me and forced me to walk into the ambulance. The social workers carry me to the night shelter, I don’t know wha she tell dem.
But they tell me this morning that was only for the night. And they put me in a taxi and bring me hey this morning,” the patient said.
“Them at the hospital say that I could walk, but you see how I deh. They say how I call in the media fuh expose them,” he added.
The man, who is no stranger to the police, was imprisoned for obtaining credit by fraudulent means.
He claimed to have contracted malaria while he was incarcerated at the Mazaruni Prison. He was subsequently brought to the main jail in the city and was released on December 8 last year.
He claimed that despite his condition, prison authorities dumped him out on Camp Street, and it was a public spirited person who saw his plight and summoned an ambulance.
He was taken to the hospital where he remained until Wednesday night
Yesterday, police at the Ruimveldt Police Station who were saddled with the sick man contacted the Georgetown Hospital for an ambulance.
This newspaper was on hand to see porters place ‘Rooplall’ into the ambulance and take him to the hospital.
Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Hospital, Michael Khan, when contacted by this newspaper yesterday said he will address the matter when he ascertains the facts today.
