The investigative team looking into the death of Dr. Desrey Fox has finally commenced its probe.
Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, told reporters recently that the team will meet sometime this week to further discuss the circumstances surrounding Dr. Fox’s death. According to the Health Minister, every death in Guyana, which attracts some amount of interest, must first of all be investigated internally.
The hospital officials have 24 hours to inform the Health Ministry about the findings and 48 hours to submit an internal institutional report.
In addition to this, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) has a week to study the report and decide whether he wants a further investigation into the death.
“Whatever the feelings of the CMO, we will have an investigation,” Minister Ramsammy said. He explained that there were internal discussions at Cabinet level on how the investigation will be done. In this regard, the Ministry taking the advice of cabinet has put the team together. “During this week, they will be sitting down at the hospital, going through all the records and then they will submit a report to Cabinet.”
Recently, President Bharrat Jagdeo had expressed dissatisfaction with the report on the circumstances surrounding the death of the Junior Education Minister.
The Minister succumbed suddenly at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation on December 11, 2009, while receiving treatment following a vehicular accident.
She had been in hospital for almost a week, and according to reports, was on her way to recovery when she died. Several questions were raised concerning the treatment that the late Minister received, with Opposition Leader Robert Corbin, among the first persons calling for a thorough probe.
But Dr. Ramsammy had dismissed suggestions that the Minister did not receive the best health care possible.
In this regard, President Jagdeo had noted that he needed a comprehensive report since he was not satisfied with the oral report he had received from the Health Minister.
President Jagdeo said that he was told that the late Minister Fox had sustained some fractures.
“How do you move from that to dying? There has to be some explanation,” the Head of State had stressed.
