– President notes 90 persons rehired
The Guyana Postal and Telecommunication Workers’ Union (GPTWU) which sought the Ministry of Labour’s intervention to reinstate the casuals dismissed on December 31, last, held a press conference at the GPTWU headquarters on East Street yesterday.
According to Harold Shepherd, President of GPTWU the breaches and violations committed by the GPOC placed its management in a position where they found it prudent to hastily start a two-day training programme and rehiring of approximately 90 of the terminated employees.
While ten had sought employment in the private sector and the remainder has sought to further their education.
He further said the management of the GPOC will now have to honour all its legal obligations as it relates to severance to all of the terminated employees and the Union expects same to be done in a timely manner.
He added that the union, through its militancy, was able to force the management of the GPOC to comply with the sections of the Termination of Employment and Severance Pay Act in so far as the monetary entitlements to the workers are concerned, such as payment in lieu of notice and severance pay among other benefits.
The sacked casuals are to be paid benefits as though they were permanent employees.
He noted that the chairman of the GPOC, Bishop Juan Edghill, who gave conflicting accounts for the severing of the service of the employees reported in the media that that category of workers has not the skills required nor are they qualified for the job ironically, all those who were trained and wrote the examination passed and are now re-employed, which shows bad management on his behalf.
According to General Secretary of GPTWU, Eslyn Harris, the same casuals that were considered not having the necessary skills and qualifications for the job were trained for two half days and were appointed Postal apprentices.
However, the GPTWU sought to have the casuals appointed since New Year’s Day as was discussed at a bilateral level meeting with the GPOC last year.
She added that the matter could have been dealt with in a proper manner as outline and set out in the collective labour agreement.
She said that the Ministry of Labour noted that the GPOC violated all the laws as it relates to the Termination of Employment and Severance Pay Act and the collective labour agreement between the GPOC and the GPTWU.
