Mega arrangements take shape
By Edison Jefford
Pulsating, exciting and intense basketball returns to Georgetown tomorrow night when an anxious Courts Pacesetters line-up takes on Ravens for bragging rights in a revenge game as the new Season in the City is officially launched.
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) placed weeks of doubt behind them yesterday when they invited the media to unveil what is being promoted as a Season of effervescent and consistent basketball in Georgetown.
If everything goes according to scripts, tomorrow night can turn out to be one of the most riveting nights in basketball history when number one and two ranked, Courts Pacesetters and Ravens respectively, collide in the opening duel.
There simply could not have been any other way to open the 2010 epoch than to bring the best two teams in the City together to settle an existing score. The last time these two met Pacesetters were savagely beaten out of contention.
The preceding game will feature the best junior team in Linden against Georgetown for a rematch of the 2009 Junior All-Star game that Linden won. The night is set for tempers to flare as would the leading basketball talents in Guyana.
A March Pass of affiliate GABA Division I and III clubs is expected to precede the mega games set for the night, which will also feature an entertaining environment fit to host the premier local basketball stars and other personalities. Secretary of the Georgetown sub-association, Robert Cadogan said that the entire League cost approximately $4 million to run, and as a result, the association is hosting Saturday’s grudge games as a form of fundraising for the League.
“We are trying to get some funds to offset some expenses related to the event. It’s a lot of talent that will be on show and we are really hoping that people would come out and give us their support,” Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
This newspaper understands that 25 percent of the earnings from the event will be given to Haitian disaster relief efforts. Tomorrow night, therefore, has a dual purpose of raising funds for the GABA and for Haiti’s earthquake victims.
HJTV Rewind Cameras, Guyanalive and other interactive networking websites will be in the house for the opening of the Georgetown Season while ‘Please Help Haiti’ jerseys at a cost of $1,000 are to be on sale as well as the GABA attempts a new look.
Windjammer International Hotel, Stag Beer, HJTV, Star Party Rental, Professional Keys Shop and Facts and Roses are the main sponsors of the event. The official League begins the following night also at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
