Russia has sent four airplanes of supplies, including food and medicine, to Haiti following the devastating 7.0 earthquake which struck the island just over a week ago.
According to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Georgetown, Russia had joined the rest of the world in expressing it condolences and sincere sympathies to the Haiti to the families and relatives of victims of the catastrophic natural disaster.
According to the embassy, following instructions of President Dmitry Medvedev, the airplanes including one with a mobile hospital were sent to Haiti on January 13.
“The government of the Russian Federation joins the Group of 20, reaffirming readiness and commitment to send immediate economic and in kind assistance to attend to the basic human needs of the Haitian population at this time of hardship and will follow closely the relief and reconstruction process in Haiti.”
“The emergencies ministry’s mobile hospital will stay in Haiti,” he said.
A January 12th earthquake devastated the impoverished Caribbean nation, with estimates of the number of dead ranging up to 200,000.
An estimated three million people have been left without shelter and countries around the world are sending aid.
Russian doctors in Haiti have treated more than 100 earthquake survivors in the past few days.
