– following spate of burglaries
A high fence topped with razor wire and windows protected with grills are some of the security measures that are being installed at the Carnegie School of Home Economics following a spate of burglaries there.
The institute is located in High Street, in an area that is frequented by drug addicts and criminal elements, who have been targeting the school and other nearby buildings such as the Blind Institute. Principal Penelope Harris told Kaieteur News that despite the presence of security guards, thieves have been sneaking into the premises at night and carting off valuables such as louvre panes, computers and materials left by carpenters.
The principal expressed concern that the premises was still being broken into despite the presence of five security guards at night.
But Mrs. Harris is also appealing for more police patrols in the area, particularly at night.
Meanwhile, the principal refuted reports that students attending evening classes were often attacked by robbers. According to the official, students attending these classes are cautioned to walk in groups and to avoid loitering in what Mrs. Harris described as a “high risk” area.
