Chattergoon encourages families to come out tomorrow
By Sean Devers in Antigua
The players of the Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago cricket teams have been highly commended by their captains for their humanitarian response to the request to contribute to the charity 20/20 match tomorrow under lights at the Queens Park Oval for the earthquake-stricken victims in Haiti.
Guyana’s captain, Sewnarine Chattergoon, was equally sentimental when asked about the disastrous situation in Haiti and his team’s decision to take part in the fund-raising event. “The Guyana Cricket Board, the team management and us the players acknowledge how critical it is to show solidarity and support for our fellow Caribbean families in their moment of need and desperation.” He complimented the organizers for the alacrity with which the game has been organized and looked forward to a keenly-contested game against their old rivals. Chattergoon had no doubt that the game would receive the usual generous support from Trinidad and Tobago fans and urged families to make a special effort to be at the Oval tomorrow evening.
T&T captain Ganga, was visibly saddened by the plight of those in Haiti who were affected by the worst Earthquake to hit that Island in over 200 years. “My team-mates and I were saddened and overwhelmed by the enormity of the disaster that has befallen the people of Haiti from the awesome earthquake. We needed no persuasion to play in the charity match for our suffering and unfortunate CARICOM brothers and sisters,” Ganga said.
According to the captain, an opportunity has been provided for the T&T team to play in front of their home crowd after their splendid performances in India in the international Club League 20/20 Championship. Ganga expects a bumper crowd to fill the Oval to show their usual generosity for such a cause.
Both Skippers praised their players who have agreed to interrupt their regional cricket schedule to participate in the match which will be preceded by live-entertainment featuring some of the top artistes in Trinidad.
The 2 teams will depart Antigua today and then leave Trinidad on Thursday for their next match which starts on Friday in Barbados.
The Governments of both countries have donated US$1Million to the Haiti relief fund.
