One Guyanese confirmed dead
Even as logistics for the international community remain a major challenge to access and provide aid to those affected by the earthquake in Haiti, reports from the Guyana Committee for Haiti relief are that one Guyanese died in the earthquake.
Minister Priya Manickhand yesterday confirmed that Donald Richards died and stated that the man’s family reported that his son who was also feared dead was found alive. She said that if all goes well and he desires to resettle in Guyana he will be assisted.
On that note, she reiterated her call for Guyanese who might have relatives in Haiti to contact her Ministry and submit the names to be placed on the Website.
“We are not promising that we will be able to look for them but at least their names will be out there,” the Minister said.
She added, “We stand ready to offer assistance to the man and we are prepared to relocate him to Guyana if he so desires.”
The relief committee is also set to launch its website today.
Minister Manickchand, the chairman of the Guyana Haiti Relief Committee, said that while Guyana has not had any communication with the Haiti Government the local drive to amass relief efforts for Haiti continues.
As at yesterday, reports from the Guyana Haiti Relief Committee indicated that CARICOM leaders are yet to be afforded the opportunity to have a first hand assessment of the needs in Haiti.
However, fundraising efforts are continuing in Guyana and yesterday Minister Priya Manickchand, amidst receiving cash and kind donations from individuals and companies, said that the local relief efforts have garnered $214.8M in cash and that the amount is growing.
This amount does not include the recent amounts collected by the National Communications Network Channel 11 and the CDC.
Yesterday the Minister received $500,000 from Toolsie Persaud Group of companies, $200,000 from M&M snackette and $193,980 from Bishop Juan Edghill.
These donations were received in the Civil Defence Commission boardroom. Bishop Edghill’s donation was made on behalf on several denominations.
Yesterday, too, Princes Street resident, Ayube Khan, walked into the Civil Defense Commission during the donation session and donated $5000 in cash as well as a quantity of clothing.
“These are some things I got in a barrel and was keeping but now I’ve found the perfect opportunity to pass them on to people who are in need and I’m praying that God brings them through. I’m also asking that the public continue to give help our sisters and brothers in Haiti too,” he added.
Mohamed Harnanan, manager of Toolsie Persaud Group of Companies, and Maxine McPherson handed over the donations.
Mc Pherson said that the monies were garnered from the management and staff while Harnanand said that depending on the needs that arise this might be only an initial donation.
Bishop Edghil said the donations he presented were garnered from special prayer rallies staged at the Winners Ministries, Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, Sunday evening.
Minister Manikchand in the company of several committee members as well as CDC head, Chabilall Ramsaroop, said she is not sure if Guyana will commit to handing over all the relief garnered to CARICOM because there are several Guyanese who want to be on the ground to offer assistance first hand.
