Cites indiscipline of certain senior players as primary reason
The lack of vision on the part of a group of senior players of the BK International Western Tigers Football Club (BKIWTFC) has resulted in the resignation of its President Gordon Gilhuys.
The former President resigned with effect from last Saturday following a meeting with the general membership which took place at the Canteen of BK International, Mandela Avenue.
The main area of contention is that the players are making demands to cash in on all the monies that were given to the club following their success in winning their first ever Kashif and Shanghai Football Championship.
According to Gilhuys, who has been at the helm of the club ever since 2007, the club policy has been that the winnings from any competition would be distributed on a 60/40 basis, the majority going to the players.
“We have sought to make the players as comfortable as possible and have bend over backwards to make them happy and contented.”
Apart from the 1.2milliom dollars (cash & kind) first prize for the 20th Kashif and Shanghai football competition of which 1 million was given to the players, they are still pushing for the entire 3 million which was given to the club for its continued development by Gold Target Export, Victoria’s Fashion and Mark Interior Communication for their victory against Pele in the semi finals of the K&S tournament.
Gilhuys said he is very disappointed with the stance of the few senior players and has taken the decision to take his leave from the club which he has presided over for the past two years. Decisions on how donations are handled by the club have to be decided by the executive.
Gilhuys further stated that even though the club policy is 60/40 when it comes to takings from tournaments the executive took the decision to give the players all the prize monies ($500,000) from the Mackeson Futsal championship which they won as well as the 2nd place prize monies of $200,000 from the NAMILCO Football Festival.
Coupled with that, as further encouragement to win the K&S tournament, players were given additional monies of $20,000 and $10,000 respectively during December but apparently are not satisfied as they are seeking more, even the donation of 3 million for the further development of the club.
Given the fact that so much was done for the players, Gilhuys said that the club ran out of funds and the contribution by Gold Target Export, Victoria’s Fashion and Mark Interior Communication was a blessing to them as they still have a number of areas and developmental programmes to deal with in 2010.
In an article which was done earlier, Gilhuys had summed up the K&S win as development for the club. “My own view is that this win means development for us and more so our youths. Our boys were a committed and disciplined unit and stuck to the task at hand in an admirable way. They have all worked hard and deserve to enjoy every moment of their success.”
But the situation has changed in a dramatic way ever since with the senior players not thinking about the onward thrust of the club including the repairing of the fence and the upgrading of the field.
Gilhuys said that despite all the rumblings that have been going on, all the monies that have been collected from various sponsors can be accounted for.
“We have an account at the Bank of Nova Scotia with some 2.1 million in that account and I had some great and ambitious plans for this club this year but that I guess is now history.”
Quizzed on whether he would reconsider his stance, Gilhuys said that he has made a decision and that is final.
“This year as I had stated in the press before, I wanted the club to focus on the development of others departments, namely our junior departments and that will not happen and of course I am very disappointed but I guess that this is life.
Based on our performance and the manner in which we won, a number of entities and individuals had already promised their full support to take this club to the next level, but again, this will not be reality now.”
What Gilhuys had also stated in relation to the monies, is that the Club was planning to go to the St. Lucia edition of the Kashif and Shanghai tournament later this year.
“This trip would have been quite expensive but we as an executive felt it was necessary for the club but apparently this is not a good thing for us. The players have decided what they want and I have decided to make way for someone else to take over the reins.”
Long serving Secretary of the club Dexter Cush when contacted said he was not aware that Gilhuys had resigned since he was not in receipt of a formal document. But he said that he too was not in agreement with the stance of the players. He (Cush) was not present at Saturday’s meeting.
