After a night of heated arguments with her husband Orin, Abigail Bollers, went to the Cove and John Police Station to make a report.
By the time she was done, the house she shared with her husband and eight of her nine children, at Middle Walk, Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara was already in flames.
Her husband had packed up his important documents and was apparently heading towards Victoria when the police arrested him for the suspected arson.
Around 03:30 hours by the time a fire tender arrived from Georgetown, some 45 minutes after the blaze started, the two bedroom wooden house was completely destroyed.
So quickly did the fire rage through the house that even neighbours were helpless to render any assistance.
The couple’s children had earlier been taken in by a neighbour, as they waged a heated argument.
The outcome at the end, though distressing was not too surprising.
Neighbours said that the couple argued constantly, a possible result of the woman’s mental condition.
The husband’s father, Donald Bollers, whose parents had left the property in his care, but reside two villages away at Victoria, received a telephone call around 03:00 hours.
He was informed that the house was on fire and he immediately drew his own conclusion.
“Because of the fact that I know that the husband and wife are always in a quarrel because of certain circumstances, which I’m aware of and which over the years I was trying to rectify,” Donald Bollers told Kaieteur News.
According to Bollers, his son, who works at the GuySuCo Enmore Estate, and his wife, had also destroyed household items prior to the fire, during their constant quarreling.
“I’m sorry that this had to happen but it wasn’t too surprising to me because of the history.”
Bollers, a former police officer, said that because of his interest of the couple’s children, who are mostly girls, he has been rendering whatever assistance he could.
Bollers said when he arrived at the scene of the fire, he did not see his son or his daughter-in-law.
Only a few of the children were around being consoled by neighbours. The house was already destroyed.
“It is a tragic loss but at least they are still alive. Murder would have been worse,” Bollers stated.
The suspect is in Police custody. He has not yet confessed to setting fire to the house.
