Professional Bodybuilder Hugh Ross backs initiative
By Franklin Wilson
A young and courageous Guyanese Businessman has taken on the challenge of providing for the holistic needs of bodybuilders, athletes and active people, so says Jamie McDonald, Manager of the recently opened Fitness Express which specializes in health and fitness products.
The 26 year-old Mc Donald who studied and has an under graduate degree in Political Science from the York University in Canada said he was driven into this field after working for two and a half years in a nutrition store while in Canada on a part time basis.
McDonald said he was also a gym fanatic and during his years in Canada after migrating there in 2002 he had the urge to open a similar business there but as a small man could not match the competition from the bigger stores.
“I decided one day that I will quit my job over there and come back to Guyana to see how things are. When I came back I wanted to get some supplements for myself and this proved a difficult task. So I went up to Florida about five months ago and brought in a small supply and that is how I started.”
The young businessman said he then decided that it is better to go into the business on a bigger scale and explored the possibility of getting a store and as it turned out, “I was lucky to get this store here at 47 Sheriff Street, Campbellville.”
And that’s the genesis of the business which opened its doors on Monday January 4, 2010. McDonald’s intention is to make the business a complete nutritional store which caters to the need of everyone across every sport.
“We will have vitamins, herbs, protein powders, shakes and all the bodybuilding stuff. I’m trying to make it like the stores in North America, a complete sort of thing.”
McDonald will be boosting his current supplies and varieties within the next two weeks. More vitamins and clothing (for women initially) will also be added. Premium Brands is what McDonald said he will be dealing with, not anything substandard. McDonald said he is very impressed with the level of awareness that is being shown by persons when it comes to exercising and being fit. “I think exercising is necessary, all the kinds of foods that we are eating now and work not being the way it was years ago when persons were very active, you have to exercise and go to the gym.”
Fitness Express, McDonald said, is very customer oriented where customers are guided and advised on what is best for them when they make a purchase.
“When people come in I spend a lot of time with them because I want to make sure people are using the products properly, they must understand what they are buying and using.” Guyana first professional Bodybuilder Hugh Arlington Ross took time off to visit Fitness Express and said he was very impressed with the variety of products available and at affordable prices. “I am indeed happy to see that such a young person has taken up the challenge of providing for the nutritional needs of athletes and the products that are available are very good and wholesome and will enhance the development of athletes and active persons.” McDonald said he was elated to meet Ross. “For me it was very encouraging for him to take the time to come here and to give his blessings to the business.
It was good to talk with him and to see what he thinks, a lot of it is on par with my views also so that was great.
I must say Mr. Ross is in great shape, you know sometimes you see photos of these guys and in persons it is different but in Mr. Ross’ case he looks exactly the same and it seems he is in shape all the time.”
