Dear Editor,
I thank you for publishing my first letter which you captioned “Life owes us nothing”, meaning that everyone gets out of life exactly what he or she puts in, nothing less or nothing more.
The advice that Croesus gave to CYRUS, King of the Persians “I am reminded, O King; and take this lesson to heart; that there is a Wheel on which the affairs of men revolve, and its mechanism is such that it prevents any man from being always fortunate”.
This Wheel is a Wheel of Life that controls the destiny of us all. One has to take control of one’s mind and direct it to the attainment of some Definite Major Purpose in Life.
Nothing ever happens without a definite cause. It was by no mere chance that the United States of America came to be known as the richest and freest country in the World.
I hope that Guyanese here in Guyana would through the articles that I shall be constantly writing begin to realise that Guyana can be a land which affords plenty of opportunities for the expression of personal initiative, freedom of worship and freedom of speech giving an assurance of becoming a successful country.
Here the co-operation of every citizen in our beloved country is both necessary and important, because it is only through an harmonious and positive attitude we can hope to achieve success as a nation. The time has come for each Guyanese to make a serious and realistic assessment of our past so as to fashion what necessary steps are to be taken to bring success in the future.
We have to choose the road of faith not fear. This choice hinges on one’s mental attitude. The person who takes the Faith Road has conditioned the mind to believe, a little at a time, by making prompt and courageous decisions in the details of daily experience.
The person who takes the Fear Road has neglected to condition the mind to be positive.
Very often we see many people settling at the side of the road begging, gaining a meager living by begging. The excuse very often is that they have lost their job or the use of a limb. However the brain has not been affected. That person is otherwise strong and healthy but has chosen the Fear Road.
Speaking of the other course, the Faith Road, one can look at Franklin Delano Roosevelt who became President of the United States of America.
What he lost through incapacity in his limbs, he gained in the use of his brain and will, causing his physical affliction to in no way hinder him from being one of the most active men occupying the position as President.
I close with this inspirational poem by R.L. Sharpe “A Bag of Tools”.
Isn’t it strange that Princes and Kings
And Clowns that caper in sawdust rings;
And common Folks, like you and Me,
All are builders for eternity;
To each is given a Book of Rules
A Block of Stone and a Bag of Tools
And each must shape ere time has flown,
And stumbling block or a stepping stone
