Yesterday at the office of Bernard De Santos, many security guards who previously worked with R.K Security, along with Richard Kanhai, were present to hear what their representing counsel had to say, since an injunction was filed by R.K Security Company barring Strategic Action Security Services from removing its workers from sites.
Kanhai argued that his contract with the government is still in force.
According to Bernard De Santos, the matter is being fast tracked and a hearing is set for an early date.
Director of the Strategic Action Security Services, Richard Kanhai, said that by consensus of the guards and their concerns the guards had to withdraw their services because they are helpless.
He added that he thought that the government would have intervened and brought a deal so things could return to normalcy, since many Government locations are left unmanned.
However, the Government withdrew its contract without any notification.
“We worked since November to December and only received half month salary from Mr Kanhai which is $10,000 and we are being paid $3,000 a fortnight,” one guard said.
According to Pauline Coxfield, who claimed that Roshan Khan is a crook and that she is not going to work with him but needs her money, she owes New Building Society for November and December and is unable to pay since she has no money given that the new firm has taken over.
She said that she visited the Minister of Labour yesterday and it appears as if Mr Nadir is in favour of Roshan Khan because explanations are given about problems she is facing and the Minister is not interested to listen, “he only wants to get rid of persons with problem with Roshan Khan from his office”.
She added that God would make Roshan Khan pay for his actions in the future.
Beverly Jones said she owes two months rent and three phone bills and recently her husband was partly electrocuted and is at home.
She added when she said that she doesn’t want to work with Roshan Khan she was chased from her worksite and has not received any money to date and has a family to care for.
Adolphus Rodriques said he was previously employed with Richard Kanhai and signed over to Roshan Khan, he also leant that half of his November salary along with December salary Roshan Khan has and does not want to pay, and when he inquired about it he was told that Richard Kanhai would have to pay them for that period.
Saisnarine Ally said on December 23, last, Roshan Khan sent one of his supervisors to ask him to sign a paper and he refused and told him he was working with Richard Kanhai, the supervisor then said that that he will get paid and everything will remain the same as Mr. Khan had it.
He then added that he last worked Old Years day and received no money and is not willing to work under such cruel conditions anymore since he has a family to maintain.
Wilson Anderson said Richard Kanhai paid him from November 1, to November 15 and Roshan Khan was supposed to pay him from November 16, to the end of December last. However, Khan told him that he would have to go to Richard Kanhai for money and not to him.
Many other workers claimed the same experience.
According to another guard, he only worked for $3,000 for the month of December and Roshan Khan changed the working hours from twelve hours to eight hours a day.
However, in a statement, Roshan Khan stated that some Guards of the former Security Service are being dishonest at various locations, even when they switched to us.
“They tend to go home after reporting for duties and want to be paid when they do not work. RK’s will not allow this dishonesty.
“Another set of ranks at the Diamond Hospital in the old system are charging sick, poor people $1000 each for entry numbers to various clinics. They were also renting T. shirts for $ 200 to people who were not properly dressed.
“We are switching their shifts and transferring some of them. We understand that they are getting annoyed and wish to use various media to get their way.
“This is why some in the Regional Contract were misbehaving. They knew that RK’s is organised and disciplined and that we will not tolerate financial abuse of poor and sick people.”
According to Roshan Khan, the injunction was thrown out by the judged yesterday.
In November, Government awarded security contracts to R.K.’s Security in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six—regions that were covered by Strategic Action.
On Friday November 13, last, the Ministry of Local Government signed a $46M per month contract with R.K.’s Security for Government facilities in
Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six, while Homesafe Security will be providing security services to the tune of $14M monthly for Regions One, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten. The contracts came into effect on November 16, 2009.
When the Minister of Labour was contacted, he said copious notes were taken at a one-hour meeting and various issues were raised by individuals. He said that as early as next week the Ministry will take action to try to find solutions.
