Students of the Wisburg Secondary School in Linden have been urged to help spread the message of water conservation.
Guyana Water Incorporated, GWI, the nation’s supplier of water and sanitation services, hosted a tour for a class of 20 students from the school.
Guided by GWI Divisional Manager, Rawle Friday, the students toured the West Watooka Water Treatment Plant and were provided with a full illustration of the water treatment process utilised by GWI.
“The students were required to study the water purification process as part of the syllabus,” stated class teacher Evette Anthony of the Wisburg Secondary School.
“Seeing the process first-hand has given them a tremendous understanding of the importance of the purification process and the vital role GWI plays with regard to public health,” said Anthony. During the tour, the water utility also highlighted the issue of wastage by customers. Students were urged to propagate the message of conservation within their school and home environments.
Students were provided with guidelines on how to identify leaks as well as the various water conservation methods which are necessary due to the looming global water scarcity.
The Water Company is embarking on a School Education Programme aimed at fostering awareness about the actions Guyanese must take in light of the earth’s depleting water resources as well as the need for customers to place priority on payment for their water service.
Titled, “H2O Kidz ‘n Action”, the programme will commence in late January 2010 in schools across the Nation.
