Guyana vice-captain Assad Fudadin hit a fine half century as Tiger’s XI defeated All Star XI of Wakenaam by 11 runs in a feature twenty/20 cricket match played on Sunday last at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground in Good Success.
Played in front of a large and colourful crowd which included national coach Ravindra Seeram and assistant Cricket Development officer of the GCB Robin Singh, Tigers XI batted first and scored 140 – 8 off their allotted 20 overs.
Fudadin, a former West Indies U-19 player, top scored with 63 (3×6,2×4) while another national player Rajendra Chandrika made 31 and Javed Mohamed, the son of former national wicketkeeper Sheik Mohamed contributed 25. Left arm spinner Imran Khan grabbed 2-15, Offspinner Gurnauth Khemraj 2-20, Chandreka Ragnauth 2-30 and Vickram Ramnarine 2-32 for the home team.
All Star XI in reply scored 129-9 off their 20 overs. Tulsieram Ramadeen led with 33 and Vickram Ramnarine supported with 22 as Dru Bahadur captured 4-34 and Brandon Chanderpaul 2-30 for the winners.
The Tigers collected the winning trophy while Dru Bahadur received the man-of-the-match award. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was also awarded for his achievement as an international cricketer.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony Chanderpaul thanked the residents of Wakenaam for their hospitality and said he appreciated the warm welcome he received when he arrived on the island.
The Test left hander told the over 1500 fans present at the venue that he was sorry he couldn’t take part in the game because he is injured, but promised to return as soon as the injury heals so that he can play in a match.
Organiser of the game, Mustak Mohamed, thanked Chanderpaul and the team for visiting the island and taking part in the fund rising match of which the proceeds will be used to purchase a cholesterol machine for the hospital.
Meanwhile, Chanderpaul who was overwhelmed with the fans as they took the opportunity to interact with his, also visited a few villages on Wakenaam before the game where he met scores of residents who converge along the roadside to greet him. Chanderpaul’s father, Khemraj also took part in the match. (Zaheer Mohamed)
