The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) will celebrate its 10th anniversary on January 27, 2010.
Commissioner-General, Khurshid Sattaur, said that the organisation will reflect on the bold steps it has made toward modernization and improved service to taxpayers, and strategize measures to be implemented for greater performance.
The Customs and Excise and the Inland Revenue organizations were merged to form the GRA. Several measures were put in place to ensure efficiency and proficiency in tax administration.
According to the GRA, several tax reform measures were undertaken by the organisation to bring equity to the tax system and engender compliance with the various tax acts.
Sattaur praised those honest taxpayers who honoured their obligations under the law and paid their fair share of taxes. He also applauded those who worked with the GRA to bring several tax dodgers to justice.
The Commissioner-General said that with improved infrastructure over the last two years in the form of three speed boats acquired for increased enforcement, the work-in-progress of the construction of a state warehouse, and the acquisition of a container scanner, the GRA is in a better position to address issues of smuggling.
As it relates to other forms of evasion, he said the GRA will be placing emphasis on self-employed persons to improve compliance within this category of taxpayers.
Sattaur said that the organisation will also continue to build its human resource capacity with the continued execution of its three-year comprehensive training plan which was rolled out in 2009.
Last year the GRA also moved its operations in New Amsterdam to one central location at the corner of Strand and Matthew Allen Roads in a step toward integrating the operations in that area and providing a one stop shop for taxpayers.
The GRA currently has Integrated Tax Offices in Corriverton, Linden and Anna Regina.
Through the use of the Total Revenue Integrated Processing System (TRIPS) the operations of the various departments have been knitted lending to a seamless organisation and a smooth flow of information.
