Fraud accused, Simone King and Toolsie Persaud, were again denied bail when they made a second appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The two allegedly fleeced millions from four unsuspecting persons after they pretended that they could obtain US visas for them. It is alleged that between May 2 and May 8, last year, the duo with intent to defraud, obtained $920,000 from Seetaram by falsely pretending that they were in the position to obtain a US visa for his nephew, Kishun Garykam, knowing their claim to be false.
It is also alleged that between November 24 and December 2, 2009, they obtained $1.2M from Angela Chung, by pretending that they were in a position to obtain a US visa for her. They are also accused of defrauding Vishwani Sookdeo and his wife of $779,000. It was alleged that they also obtained $2M from Elizabeth Sookdeo pretending that they could obtain a visa for her.
Toolsie, a 30-year-old laboratory technician, of 4 Triumph Village, East Coast Demerara, and King, were not required to plead to the indictable charges. The two were represented by attorney at law James Bond.
The lawyer in addressing the court said that he did not know why the virtual complainants are claiming that the money was for obtaining visas. According to the lawyer, Elizabeth Sookdeo had loaned King the money. He said that Sookdeo subsequently filed civil action in the High Court, because of King’s failure to repay her. The lawyer further stated that judgement was granted in the favour of Sookdeo.
Sookdeo, however, stated that King had told her that she would make the paperwork look like if she was borrowing money, when the reality was that King was taking the money as payment for obtaining the visas.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford said that the defendants have signalled that they intend to repay the affected persons their monies. The matter was adjourned until Friday.
