Coordinator of the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club Ms. Olga Harry said that while last year has been a good one for race walking, executives of her organization would be working strenuously to enhance the quality and quantity of competitions staged this year.
The coordinator disclosed that executives of the CSTC are scheduled to meet with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Mr. Frank Anthony this Friday to engage in a range of discussions pertaining to the sport’s advancement. She further said that the issue of the sport comprising a part of the school’s curriculum is high on the agenda.
Ms. Harry said that the sport has developed nicely over the years and organizers are now concentrating on expanding into all ten administrative regions. To this end, executives are awaiting a shipment of sports gears from their parent body that comprise of modules, boots, jerseys and trunks among other equipment. She said that the gears would be a gift from the Helen Ward Race Walk Foundation (HWRWF).
Ms. Harry also said that the parent association has committed to send a trainer to commence a workshop for local race walkers. Consequently, local organizers have planned several training sessions over the coming months for its affiliates as well as persons interested in participating.
Plans are also in train to field a race walk team to Barbados to participate in a yearly competition held in that country. Ms. Harry intimated that her executives have recently dispatched a letter to the Caricom Sports Officer, Norman Feria seeking his intervention and support to make the trip a reality. Mr. Feria’s assistance would also be solicited as the CSTC attempts to concretize relations at the Caricom level. In order to prepare for these challenges the CSTC has appointed Ms. Maria Nelson to the position of Public Relations Officer. Her responsibilities include interaction with various institutions with an aim of creating a broad based interest in the sport.
Meanwhile activities get underway proper on Sunday January 24 with a 10k walk around the Soesdyke area. Consequently, the CSTC would be awarding several persons that have rendered support towards the development of the sport over the past year.
Public Service Minister, Jennifer Westford would deliver the feature address moments before she herself receives a commendation award. Other persons that would be awarded are, Managing Director of Modern Optical Services, Dr. Jose DaSilva, General Manager of the Guyana Beverage Company, Robert Selman as well as journalists, Michael Benjamin and Jermaine Carter of Kaieteur News and National Communication Networks, respectively.
