– suspects dump portion on East Coast roads
Officials of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) last night intercepted a truck with smuggled fuel but not before the smugglers had dumped a significant portion on the Main East Coast Highway and the Railway Embankment.
The dumped fuel caused panic among motorists who had to exercise great caution to avoid a catastrophe.
But there are reports of corruption on the part of some police ranks who had intercepted the smugglers initially.
Kaieteur News understands that the police were informed that a canter truck was being loaded with fuel at Mon Repos. They intercepted the canter but it was empty.
Another truck subsequently picked up the fuel, but by then the GEA officials were onto them.
The smugglers sensing this decided to dump a significant portion of the fuel.
A trail of diesel was observed along the road from the Beterverwagting Main Road all the way to Golf Road, Lusignan, unto the Railway Embankment and back to Beterverwagting.
The truck was subsequently stopped at Mon Repos, where GEA officials carried out tests on the remaining fuel.
The smugglers were again taken into custody and are expected to be charged.
A week ago police on the East Coast of Demerara seized a quantity of smuggled fuel which was abandoned at the Montrose seawall.
The fuel is presently lodged at the Sparendaam Police Station, but there have been no charges so far.
