Cavaliers beat New Uprising by 9 wickets last Sunday at the Bartica Community Centre Ground in the opening match of the Bartica Cricket Association BCA 20/20 Competition after suspected sabotage by a senior Essequibo Cricket official resulted in a late start.
Skipper Anthony Singh scored 34 and got support from Gavin Rodrigues who made 22 but it was extras with 49 that top-scored for New Uprising who made 133 in their allotted 20 overs.
Teon Vanderhyden picked up 3-11 from 4 economical overs while Evowdo Fredericks had 2-13 from 3 overs for Cavaliers who reached 136-1 in 11.4 overs to win in emphatic fashion.
Shastri Mangal slammed an entertaining unbeaten 86 from just 33 balls while Fredericks completed a fine all-round performance by falling 10 short of his 50. Ron Williams took the wicket to fall.
According the Secretary of the BCA Festus Benn, the match began one hour and 45 minutes late because of extensive damage to the pitch.
Benn alleges that the damage to the only cricket pitch in Bartica was deliberately done by a senior member of the Bartica Cricket Committee (BCC) and Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) as an act of sabotage.
It is alleged that the damage was done on Sunday, January 10 between 05:00hrs and 06:00hrs by the cricket official and businessman.
“Because five of the six clubs in Bartica decided to form an association and have nothing to do with him, (name given) he damaged the only playable pitch available to us.
We worked very hard on the wicket and got it good enough to play the match which started at 12:45hrs instead of 11:00hrs,” Benn informed.
The cricket official was reportedly taken into custody by the police but Benn said he was not sure if he was charged.
When contacted yesterday afternoon, a Police rank at the Bartica Police Station said he was aware that the cricket official was involved in some problem on Sunday but could not provide an further information on the matter.
Efforts to contact officers who worked on Sunday proved futile and this newspaper was directed by a Bartica Police officer to the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Region 7 for a comment on the matter. However, the telephone number provided repeatedly rang out.
The 20/20 competition is scheduled to continue on Sunday at the same venue when Hampshire and Untouchables do battle.
