– Defending champs LFSS draw with All Stars XI
By Rawle Welch
Before an impressive gathering that included Regional Educational Officer Claude Johnson, local co-ordinators Mayfield Taylor-Trim, Ernest Craig and Wanda Richmond, overseas-based former footballer James ‘Gads’ Dennis, Linden / New York Sports Foundation representative Ernest Joseph, participating teams and a host of fans, the 2nd Annual Memorial Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Under-18 Schoolboys Football Tournament was launched on Monday, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
The occasion which saw remarks being made by Taylor-Trim, Joseph and Johnson was highlighted by an entertaining exhibition match between defending champions Linden Foundation Secondary School (LFSS) and an All Stars XI that ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
Eight teams have been selected to participate in the competition which opens today with LFSS taking on Wisburg Secondary School (Annexe) with kick-off time scheduled for 15:00 hrs.
Meanwhile, Joseph speaking at the ceremony thanked the local co-ordinators who he described worked diligently in making the necessary preparations for such an exciting opening, adding that with the preparations and the magnitude of the tournament, he envisages that it will stay for a long time.
“We intend to expand the tournament to reach most of the communities including Kwakwani and our plan also is to get it started at the Primary Schools level as well,” Joseph disclosed.
Johnson, in his presentation lauded the organisers for creating such a tournament which according to him will certainly make an impact on the lives of some of the participants.
“Sport in my book is serious business, it is an investment in human capital, especially the youths who are our assets for the future,” he remarked.
He added that participation in sports will empower them since they will see life as something meaningful which could then have a positive effect on the society as a whole.
He said he was heartened to be afforded the opportunity to make remarks at the occasion and thanked the sponsors on behalf of the education fraternity for such a fine gesture in bringing off the competition.
“This idea is certainly well-founded, well thought out and I’m absolutely sure will bear fruit for many years to come.”
The late Richmond was one of the most talented sportsmen in the Linden community where he participated in football, cricket, billiards, table tennis and many other disciplines.
He was born on May 1, 1942 at Golden Grove West Coast, Berbice, before moving to Mackenzie at the tender age of 7 years old.
Because of his natural talent, he was always much better than his peers and was a fixture on many of the senior teams, making the Soft Shoe Football squad named the White Star which undoubtedly was the most talented line-up at the time in Mackenzie.
That squad included players such as Mickie Jordan, Roger Hinds, Percy Canterbury, Archie and Gunner Melville, Show Bennett, Utal Wilson, Bill Roberson and Ivor ‘Reds’ Benjamin.
After leaving school, Richmond worked at the Demerara Bauxite Company (DEMBA) where he played inter-department sports, excelling in many and was asked by Georgetown club St, Barnabas to join them.
The ardent sportsman, Richmond was also an avid cricketer so much so that he recorded the highest individual score in Linden (175 runs) and shared in the highest partnership with Jimmy Hamilton (235 runs).
He also won the table tennis championship and was voted the town’s Sportsman of the Year, the first ever in the Bauxite community. He also became the first person to represent Guyana (British Guiana at the time) in any major sport from a town that was once referred to as a rural area (country) by those in Georgetown.
Winners of last year competition were presented with their prizes shortly before the start of the exhibition game, while Dennis presented a ball each to all the teams in the tournament.
