Police are hoping to make a breakthrough in their investigations into Friday’s brutal attack at Safraz Sports Bar, after detaining three men for the robbery that left waitress, Kulmattie Singh, dead and two patrons severely wounded.
A source said that the suspects were picked up after investigations indicated that they might have some information about the attack.
Kaieteur News was told that the three are known to the police. They are being questioned at CID headquarters, Eve Leary and are likely to be placed on an identification parade today.
The robbery was recorded by a close circuit camera on the Lamaha and David Street premises but police said that they were unable to identify the gunmen because of the poor quality of the images.
The popular nightspot has not opened for business since the tragedy.
Singh, called Kathy, of North East Cummings Lodge, died after she was shot in the head. A police source said that she was apparently struck by a stray bullet.
Jason Montgomery, an Australian national, was shot in the chest just below his heart, while 39-year-old businessman, Ronald Dhanraj, called ‘Lar’, was shot under the right arm.
The slain waitress’s mother, Chandrapatty, told Kaieteur News that persons at the night spot were unable to tell the family how Kulmattie was shot.
She said that she was told that the other employees fled when the bandits launched their attack, but her daughter was still in the bar.
She added that she was informed that Kulmattie was coming out of the bar when there was a gunshot. When the staffers returned, they found her mortally wounded daughter lying on the ground.
Police said that the gunmen entered the nightspot, located at David and Lamaha Streets at around 20:10 hrs.
Some of the patrons said that they initially thought that someone was pulling a prank when one of the bandits drew a handgun and ordered them to remain still.
A Police release confirmed that the gunmen also relieved the bartender of the day’s sales and that they escaped in a waiting AT 192 Toyota Carina.
