A man and his son, who attempted to bribe the foreman of a jury panel that was presiding in a murder trial at the Berbice High Court were on Friday placed on $60,000 bail each by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
The men, Venkat Sammy Naidu, 45, and his son Samjeet, 20, both of Lancaster Village, Corentyne, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of corrupt interference.
The incident allegedly occurred on November 3, 2009, at the Berbice High Court during the murder trial of Eric Sookchine called ‘Shakall’ who was on trial before Justice Winston Patterson for the murder of his wife, Jasodra Sookchine, called ‘Usha’
The Naidus who were represented by Attorney at law, Rodwell Jugmohan, both pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempting to influence Vigelli Austin Cordel in his conduct as juror. Jugmohan applied for bail in a reasonable sum for his clients. According to Police Prosecutor Satrohan Dayaram, the men who are relatives of the accused approached Cordel on Winkle Road, New Amsterdam and attempted to bribe or influence him so as to give a verdict in favour of their relative, Sookchine.
Davaram said that the matter was reported to the judge who aborted the case and informed the police, and the duo was arrested. He added that after seeking legal advice, the father and son were charged.
However, the prosecution did not object to the bail for the accused and as such, the Magistrate granted them their pre-trial liberty. The two are expected to return to court on the January 18th. Eric Sookchine called ‘Shakall’ who remains an inmate at the New Amsterdam Prison was accused of stabbing his wife Jasodra Sookchine called ‘Usha’ at their home in Whim Village on June 3rd, 2005.
