‘Dog face’ forces Magistrate to abandon court

David Williams called ‘Dog face’,24, of Angoy’s Avenue, who is charged with larceny of a cell phone had to be subdued by police ranks after he caused a commotion in the New Amsterdam Magistrate court.
His actions forced Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo to immediately adjourn proceedings and retreat to her chambers.
Williams who was described as a regular offender by the prosecution is accused of stealing a cell phone belonging to Marvin Scorpio during a gambling session on Wednesday 6th January 2010.
Williams was arrested with the phone in his possession and was later charged for the offence.
When his matter was called, he began protesting his innocence in a loud tone of voice.
He claimed that he was being targeted by the police for no reason.
As the magistrate tried to read the charges to him, the man continued his protest.
He said he was beaten by the police and plans to seek justice. He said harm will come to those who try to oppress him and he will seek an audience with the Home Affairs Minister.
Attempting to get an audience in court, the man said he was out gambling and never stole the phone.
He only collected the phone and had it for safe keeping. Turning to anyone who would listen, Williams continued in a loud tone of voice, even as the magistrate and the court orderly tried to silence him.
As Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram was addressing the court and started to object to the granting of bail, Williams again flared up and asked if Scipio could come and tell the court that he never stole the phone, everything would be alright. During the commotion, Scipio who was within the precincts of the court rose to his feet and some calm was restored.
Scipio then admitted that they were gambling but told the court that Williams did steal the phone.  The magistrate then refused bail. At that point, Williams dared any one to touch him, as some patrons started to get out of the way. The man somehow managed to release his handcuffs and pinpointed those who he would target.
At this time, the magistrate quickly retreated to the safety of her chambers as prosecutors Dayaram and Figueira and other police ranks quickly moved to subdue the suspect. The prosecutor in objecting to bail earlier had told the court that the accused who is a regular offender is alleged to have committed the act whilst he was on bail for offences of more serious nature. His next court date is 18th January.
He is expected to face further charges for his conduct.
