Dear Editor,
It seems that our tradition of annual national awards has gone never to return. We have abandoned a laudable system through which we formally recognised outstanding achievers and our own successful and admired citizens.
I wish to suggest that this year 2010 we introduce a system of recognition for the previous year’s top youth or top three youths. Perhaps for this purpose we could define youth as young persons between the ages of 15 and 25.
It would make sense for one of our daily newspapers to run with this idea. The dailies are on top of the news and are well placed to monitor, publicize and record achievements by our youth. The first task will be to establish a Youth of the Year Award Committee (YOTYAC) from which a panel of judges will emerge.
Relatives, friends, observers and knowledgeable persons will be invited to inform YOTYAC of any qualifying youth and his/her specific achievement(s).
Qualifying youth can themselves submit their names with the relevant information for consideration. By September of each year the newspaper can draw up a short list of 15 or 20 outstanding youth and their individual achievements during the year.
The independent (civic society) panel can then select the top or top three achievers having drawn up and publicized the criteria earlier in the year. The top youth achiever can be presented with the Youth of the Year Award and $1 million in January following the year of achievement.
The panel would have decided and informed the public about any conditionality for use of the prize money. The second in line can be given the number two award and $500,000 and number three an award for third place plus $100,000.
I am confident that the $1.6 million prize money can be raised from the private sector, progressive organisations and civic society. I am willing to help with the creation and organisation of this youth of the year award providing a credible newspaper or organisation agrees to run with the idea and contacts me.
