Dear Editor,
From a recent report in the press in which a union leader expressed concern about the manner in which the staff of the City Treasury rewarded themselves exclusively with the payout of a bonus, I wish to add my two bit by joining him in conveying my dismay at this very selfish and wanton behaviour at the Council.
It seems to me that despite all the findings by the Audit General Office with regards to the Treasurer’s Department which included discovery of persons unjustly receiving large interest free loans and salary advances, overpaying themselves with super salaries and illegitimately receiving monies in lieu of leave, there continues to be business as usual there.
In the first instance, these very nonchalant and irresponsible actions by the Council’s Finance Department is callous to other hard working employees of the municipality, who do not have the power to pay themselves and who are constantly told that the Council is cash strapped.
But secondly and as importantly it suggests an unacceptable level of lawlessness existing within the Council, where year after year, one department could casually put to their own use the hard earned taxes of property owners of Georgetown Municipality, rather than spending it on repairing roads, replacing non functional street lights and properly securing the municipal markets.
