Good Success allrounder Nazeer Mohamed carted off the cricketer of the year award when the Wakenaam Cricket Committee held its annual awards ceremony on Saturday at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground.
Sans Souci opener Wayne Osborne, who hit a century in the Busta semi-final, took the batsman of the year award while his teammate Vickram Ramnarine received the bowler of the year trophy.
The most improved player prize went to Imran Khan of Good Success while National U-15 vice captain Ricardo Adams of Zeelandia Sports club received Best Youth Cricketer award.
Good Success SC, who won the Mikey Speed Boat Service twenty/20 and the Sterling Products 40 overs competition and also finished runners up in the Busta 40 overs festival, were adjudged the club of the year.
Allrounders Navishaul Pooran of Zeelandia S.C and Roopnarine Persaud of Sans Souci SC were awarded for their outstanding performances throughout the year while National female cricketer Althea Newark took the female cricketer of the year prize.
Young left arm spinner Moin Khan of Sans Souci Jaguars emerged as the best Secondary School cricketer while his teammate Charles Benjamin was given an award for the most disciplined player.
The Wakenaam Cricket Committee also presented individual awards to the following persons for their long and dedicated service to Wakenaam cricket: Tulchan Pooran (Former secretary), Lennie Mohamed (former chairman, secretary and current chairman of the competition and disciplinary committees), Zakir Khan (former chairman and treasurer), Moses Ramnarine (former secretary), Ikram Mohamed and the late Ernest Manbodhe (former chairman).
Speaking at the ceremony chairman of the WCC Sheik Ahmad said he was pleased with the achievement of Wakenaam Cricket. He said the island has being producing players that represented the country at the youth level and still continues to do so with Ricardo Adams being the latest. Ahmad, who also serves on the Guyana Cricket Board and Essequibo Cricket Board executives, told the large gathering that he felt it is time for young people to take over the cricket and thanked all those who supported him over the years.
Chairman of the Wakenaam NDC Ahmad Zakir Khan said that the NDC will continue to support cricket on the island. The WCC also thanked their sponsors and all those who contributed towards their cricket development over the years.
