– was dressed as woman
Up to press time last evening police investigators were following leads as to who would have brazenly shot and killed former football player turned businessman, Vibert Weekes. Weekes, a resident of North East La Penitence, was shot and killed by a lone gunman who some eyewitnesses said was dressed in female attire.
The shooting took place a short distance away from the popular “Red Dragon” night club on Robb Street.
Yesterday when this newspaper visited the man’s home relatives said that they were not prepared to speak on the matter.
Friends of the dead man all converged on the street leading to his house and were in a state of disbelief.
Back at the scene of the crime yesterday, investigators were still combing the area for clues.
One officer recovered several warheads in the nearby drain even as the police spoke to nearby residents.
One man said that his vehicle was also damaged. Another eyewitness told this newspaper that Weekes and another friend were exiting the club when the gunman who appeared to have lain in wait across the street pounced on the two. From all appearances the men were followed from another club to the one where Weekes met his end.
Upon seeing Weekes, who appeared to be the main target, the gunman began shooting indiscriminatively.
The friend managed to escape but Weekes was shot in the leg even as he sought safety in his vehicle parked nearby.
However, that effort was thwarted by the gunman who quickly ran behind him and stood over him pumping several bullets into his body. The gunman then calmly walked to a waiting car that sped away.
Weekes was rushed to the Woodlands Hospital by public spirited citizens but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Weekes came to prominence after he was involved in another shooting incident at the National Gymnasium a few months ago. The incident reportedly stemmed from two men betting on the game of football between Terrence Bar and White Castle Fish Shop.
The men shot during that incident were Jason Marks, 17; Oriley Small, 25, Terrence Edwards, 15; Dwayne Wharton, 17, and Jamal Thomas, 17.
Kaieteur News learnt that a bet of $100,000 was made between Small and the man who shot Vibert Weekes. The deal reportedly went sour after Weekes was issued a red card early in the second half of the game and did not score a goal.
Weekes whose money it was that Small used to enter into the deal with the shooter, reportedly approached the shooter to collect the $100,000 explaining that he did not complete the game.
However, he was denied and was told by the shooter he lost the bet.
Weekes became infuriated and reportedly assaulted the shooter. The shooter was identified as Jermaine Langevine, the owner of White Castle Fish Shop. It was alleged that after the shooter saw Weekes and his friends he immediately opened fire.
Langevine and a younger sibling were later beaten and had to be admitted to a city hospital.
A number of parties, including Weekes were charged for the incident, but the matter was later settled in court after their lawyers came to a compromise.
