By Sean Devers Test left-hander Sewnarine Chattergoon who led the West Indies ‘A’ last year has replaced Ramnaresh Sarwan as Guyana Captain for their historic opening match against Trinidad and Tobago from next Friday in Antigua. Sarwan’s withdrawal, due to a troublesome back follows the unavailability of his senior West Indies teammate Shivnarine Chanderpaul who opted out of the original 13-man squad due to a finger injury sustained in Australia last December. Chanderpaul’s place in the touring party was taken by Vishaul Singh while opener Rajendrika Chandrika, who played in the Regional One-Day series in 2007 for the West Indies under-19 side, has been confirmed as Sarwan’s replacement and should open the batting with Chattergoon in Antigua. Former Guyana under-19 skipper Assad Fudadin who has the distinction of playing for the West Indies in under-15 and under-19 World Cup finals, will be Chattergoon’s deputy since the other two Test players in the side; Narsingh Deonarine and Travis Dowlin are both expected to retain their places in the West Indies side for the ODI and 20/20 series in Australia from next month. The injuries to Chanderpaul and Sarwan should not affect their participation for the West Indies’ limited overs team in Australia.
Gajanand Singh, also a former West Indies under-19 player with 5 First-Class matches under his belt, scored a century on Friday at Bourda in the last practice match for the Guyana team to stake a strong claim for selection but the fact that only one specialist opener was picked in the original squad, worked against Singh, a middle order batsman.
Dowlin, who has done the job of opener without much success for both Guyana and the West Indies, would have opened with Chattergoon but is more comfortable in the middle order where he has scored the bulk of his runs for Guyana and the West Indies and should now bat at number three in the order.
Without Chanderpaul and Sarwan, Deonarine, who scored a magnificent 83 in his last Test against Australia last month and the hard working Dowlin, will have to shoulder the batting responsibilities and the fact that Chattergoon who struggled badly in last Regional One-Day tournament returned to some form with a solid 95 in the practice match, is good news for the South Americans who finished last in last year’s 7-team competition.
Chandrika joins Policeman Trevor Benn as the only players in the side without First-Class experience for Guyana in the squad. With the expected absence of both Deonarine and Dowlin from the Barbados round of matches, players like Gajanand Singh and talented but temperamental Chris Barnwell should both gain national re-calls after losing their places from last year’s team.
Guyana, without a regional first class title since 2001, plays defending champions Jamaica in their 2nd game from January 22-25 in Barbados before facing CCC from January 29 to February 1 also in Barbados.
The Guyana squad, Managed by Carl Moore and Coached by former Guyana first-class batsman Ravindra Seeram, is scheduled to depart Guyana on Tuesday for the 108-sqaure mile Island of Antigua where they will participate in the first ever first-class match in the Caribbean to be played under lights with a pink ball.
While the players have had one of their most intensive physical preparations for a regional tournament under the watchful eyes of national certified athletics trainer and former Police first division fast bowler Linden Wilson, the bowlers struggled for potency in the 2 practice matches and no session under lights with the pink ball was organized by the Guyana Cricket Board ahead of Friday’s game at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
The Guyana team read:- Sewnarine Chattergoon (Captain), Assad Fudadin (Vice-Captain) Rajendra Chandrika, Travis Dowlin, Narsingh Deonarine, Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, Esuan Crandon, Derwin Christian, Davendra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul, Brandon Bess, Vishaul Singh, Trevor Benn, Carl Moore (Manager), Ravindra Seeram (Coach)
