– two cops injured
Two staffers from the Russian Consulate ended up in police custody around 03:00 hrs yesterday after they allegedly assaulted two policemen and a taxi driver during a drunken brawl at a popular East Bank Demerara night spot.
Police said that two police constables, Inniss and Paddy, sustained injuries to the hands and legs during the fracas, which allegedly started after one of the intoxicated Russians hurled racial slurs at a waitress after she resisted his advances.
A police official said that the Russians were detained at the Providence Police Station but were subsequently released on self-bail.
According to reports, the two staffers, identified as a technical manager and an engineer, arrived at the night spot around 21:00 hrs on Thursday and remained there until 03:00 hrs yesterday. Kaieteur News was told that the men drank heavily and that one of them eventually became intoxicated.
It is alleged that he then attempted to fondle a waitress and began to hurl racial slurs at the employee when she resisted his advances.
Kaieteur News understands that the employees then summoned a taxi to transport the men, but the intoxicated Embassy staffer allegedly refused to enter the vehicle and assaulted the driver.
The brawl escalated when security employees and other drivers went to the assaulted man’s assistance. Police source said that when the police were summoned, the other Russian joined in the brawl and attacked the police ranks, injuring Constables Inniss and Paddy.
The two Embassy staffers were eventually hauled off to the Providence Police Station.
Police officials said that an attorney finally turned up and had the men released on self-bail.
Police are to submit a report on the incident to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
