Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud, has mandated the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) to ensure that Mahaicony Rice Limited pays farmers early.
The company gave the assurance of payment during a discussion between the Guyana Rice Producers Association (RPA) after representation was made to the Agriculture minister.
The RPA has received assurances from Bankers associated with Mahaicony Rice that resources have been allocated for this crop to ensure payment to rice farmers.
It was indicated that proceeds from the sale of cargo rice worth US$3 million will be used to offset outstanding payments to farmers for the last crop. The agreement was for the payments to commence next week and continue over a five-week period. Further, the RPA said it will continue to work with rice farmers to ensure they are compensated for their produce when delivered to rice mills.
