Trinidad-based Guyanese Edmond ‘Ejo’ Johnson is hoping to be among the contestants competing for top honours in the 2010 carnival music competitions. He is taking aim at several competitions such as ‘Young Kings’ and ‘Soca Monarch’ among others in the twin-island Republic.
He said, “I plan to enter all competitions except Guyana’s Soca monarch this year because that competition takes up too much time for me and because of my past experience, among other reasons.” The artiste was among the finalists at the 2008 Carib Soca monarch but did not place in the final five.
Singing under the name Ejo at the 2008 Carib Soca monarch competition his rendition was titled “Naked.”
He said that he is also aiming to eventually do some musical collaboration with some of Guyana’s top artiste the likes of ‘Big Red.’
Missing home especially around Mashramani time he says, “Since Carnival is before Mashramani this year maybe I’ll come home and be a judge if I’m asked to do so”.
His two Soca hits this year are titled ‘Sweet Rumona’ and ‘Push Sweetness’.
Explaining Sweet Rumona he said basically it speaks of when ladies drink rum they love to hear a good playing iron; “The iron meaning pan or a rhythm section and it is written with carnival and Mashramani in mind,” Johnson said.
Verse one says “Give me rum an me ding a ling. Oh boy yuh not thinking straight boy. Don’t try and make me irate, she want de iron.”
The second song titled ‘Push Sweetness’ he says was penned for one of the Jouvert bands that uses chocolate instead of mud. He says it tells of “when sweetness hit the women they does push back and get on real wassey (behave crazy).”
Johnson, who hails from Norton Street, Wortmanville, has several music videos to his name and several singles such as the reggae laced ‘Karma: the seeds you sow will grow,’ and Secrets (Mondale Smith)
