Initiative part of decentralisation programme
The much-talked-about and much-anticipated Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) decentralisation programme was initiated in Essequibo earlier this week with the launch of a sub-committee for the development of the sport.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the committee came as a direct offspring of the workshop that was conducted in Essequibo last November where seven schools and the sport officer were given the requisite skills for the pilot project. The committee was officially inaugurated on January 4, and given the direct mandate that they must facilitate the development of table tennis in the region. They will be supported directly from the Georgetown-based, GTTA.
The decentralisation programme was part of the psyche of the national association for the past two years where General Secretary Godfrey Munroe had stated that it is important to the development of the sport across the country.
However, the association was set back owing to the lack of equipment to get the initiative off the ground. The decentralisation programme requires a concert of gears and personnel to be effective and the GTTA understood that concept.
In so doing, after failing to procure the requisite tools from local assimilation, the GTTA was forced to broker a deal with India-based STAG for equipment over a four year period that will be used for the decentralisation of the sport.
This newspaper understands that with the current crop of players, who are mostly central in Georgetown, going out of the sport at one level or another, the table tennis association is extending its scope for the longevity of the discipline.
The idea is to have some 52,000 students playing table tennis this year. The association’s schools’ competition is set to launch this month end while the shipment of equipment for the schools is expected in Guyana in another six weeks.
